The simple pleasures of adulthood
As my Nan fiddled with a rubber band at the table post-Easter Sunday lunch, she shared the quote, “small things amuse small minds, but smaller minds notice.”
Originally written by Dorris Lessing, I was impressed to hear that there was more to the “small things, small minds” quote. What was once thought to be self-deprecating to my grandmother, I now know to be a double-edged sword (especially because I was the one who noticed she was fiddling)!
In this list’s case, small things can amuse, excite and enlighten adult minds. Normal things turn from boring to brilliant in mere seconds! So, I turned to my fellow adult friends to compile a list of the normal things that put a pep in our steps.
When the weather is a sunny, hot day and you have bed sheets to wash
All bits and bobs of recycling fit snug inside one box, allowing easy travel to the bin
Having all of the meals for the week ahead ready on Sunday
(Yes, you’re better than everyone, you absolute superstar. Bonus points if the leftovers fit snug into one container)
Finishing work in time for the happy hour at your local pub
Getting ready together with friends. Sometimes, the pre-event antics are better than the event itself
When your work-from-home day corresponds with:
a. The tradie finally fixing that broken towel rail
b. Getting to the doctor's first thing in the morning
c. Making the 5 pm gym class
d. Hanging the sheets out AND it being 30 degrees outside (outstanding)
All of your friends’ schedules aligning! You can finally go to the wine bar you sent them on Instagram six months ago!
Having a good night's sleep and waking up in the morning feeling energised
(A skill five-year-olds continually take for granted)
Attending an event that allows you to wear comfortable shoes
Getting a car park right in front of your destination
(Bonus points if you didn’t have to reverse parallel park)
