02. Gram noms and being a fangirl
Grammy nominations were released this week, and I’m excited. As a Swiftie, I’m even more excited at the prospect of Taylor Swift winning her 13th Grammy (iykyk). Like the past few years, I read through the nominations the other day and reflected on why I was so interested in an award show I could only dream of attending one day.
I’ve always been fascinated by big-shot awards and award shows, intrigued at the times when the public or individuals disagreed with award recipients (*cough* Kanye *cough*). I think there’s lots to say about award show moments that are sprawled all over the news outlets the next day and how they shape conversations around the world for the following week. It could be about the daring outfits on display, the awkward run-in between two people who famously used to date or the pure talent of the actor/artist/producer, etc. I think the latter is what I like most, admiring people whose hard work is being recognised on a world stage. I find it inspiring.
I commonly find myself trying to answer why I am such a “fangirl” and why I care so much about the bands, performers, and other well-known figures I support. Over the years I’ve justified to someone why I love One Direction so much or whatever other obsession someone commented on. Most of the time I would get defensive and respond with some impressive facts about them because I’m deranged. As I get older, I wonder why the hell anyone cared that much, and why I still care about people’s opinions.
I enjoy supporting these public figures not for their looks, but because I resonate with and admire their work. They are succeeding in the field of my hobbies and interests. It’s just like loving a sport and following your favourite player. Not many people can say they have won a Grammy or written a hit sitcom that ran for nine years so, bloody good on them. I’ll admire that work and wonder how they got there! I love and will stand by it. Now, please excuse me while I retreat to TikTok to catch up on what just happened at the Eras Tour Argentina night two show, in peace.
