27. That’s that me, espresso
Sabrina Carpenter’s single Espresso has taken TikTok and the Billboard charts by storm, before replicating the same response with her latest single Please, Please, Please. Carpenter has been in showbiz for many years but with the help of one of her most recent gigs as the supporting act at Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour has cemented her as the poster perfect pop princess of the moment. Her highly anticipated new album, Short and Sweet, is set to be full of lovable and ridiculously catchy hooks. Regardless of the goals she’s kicking now, I want to thank Sabrina Carpenter for one thing in particular at this time; correcting the narrative of espresso.
How many times have you heard someone call it an expresso? Perhaps it was you who mistakenly ordered an expresso martini? Yes, Carpenter created a beautiful pop that gets stuck in our heads whether we like it or not. But she’s also created a pop-culture perfect reason for everybody to have no excuse if they say “expresso” nowadays.
I hate to be the one to slander incorrect grammar choices, I know I’m not perfect either. I don’t find joy in correcting people, but it does make it easier when I have a pop culture reference to do it with.
In other pop culture news, Paul Mescal wore a cute pair of short shorts to the Gucci men’s SS25 show; not a question but, yes. The loveable Harry Potter we know and love, Daniel Radcliffe won a Tony award for his role in Merrily We Roll Along, and happily we cheer him on. Charli XCX’s new album Brat is SO good and I’m not the only one saying it. Brat has chaotic, vulnerable, rockstar, abrupt and honest lyrics and I’m convinced you can find your next hype song on that album.
And of course, Carpenter has done God’s work in improving a common grammar error for the better, but I’m not surprised; Jesus was a carpenter. I would thank her personally but I’m pretty sure she’s working late (because she’s a singer).
